de Blasio Calls Using $11.6M in Taxpayer Dollars on Criminal Defense Lawyers his "American Right"

Embattled New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who is under multiple corruption investigations at the local, state, and federal levels, and who said yesterday on WNYC that it is his “American right” to use millions of taxpayer dollars to fund his and his cronies’ legal defense, has now admitted that he will be undergoing questioning at U.S. Attorney’s office to address questions about his controversial, and almost certainly pay-to-play, fundraising activities. This revelation comes just days after admitting he had been called into the Manhattan District Attorney’s office in December.

According to published reports, the meeting with the U.S. Attorney’s office will take place at some point over the next several weeks.

“Bill de Blasio is justifying spending more than $11.6 million of hard-working New Yorkers’ taxpayer dollars to defend himself and his cronies by saying it is his ‘American right’. It is outrageous that he believes taxpayers footing the bill for his Park Avenue lawyers at the rate of $850-an-hour is defensible.” said small businessman and New York City mayoral candidate Paul Massey.

“The fact that we are even talking about this level of corruption with the sitting Mayor of New York City is stunning. I want to know who is focused on running this City, as Bill de Blasio is surely more interested in keeping himself and his cronies out of prison than doing his job,” Mr. Massey said.

“As the Mayor and his $850-per-hour Park Avenue lawyers huddle discussing criminal legal strategy, 60,000 homeless face another night on the streets, and the most vulnerable children of New York remain at risk due to his clear lack of leadership. This is an egregious affront to the people of New York who deserve a Mayor who isn’t tangled up in an ongoing legal morass. The Mayor of New York is a full-time job. Clearly, Bill de Blasio isn’t up for it,” Mr. Massey said.
