DLA Piper Named a Finalist for The American Lawyer's Global Pro Bono Deal of the Year

10/14/19

DLA Piper is pleased to announce that the firm was recently named a finalist for The American Lawyer's Global Pro Bono Deal of the Year award.

DLA Piper was nominated for the award for its successful representation of Farhan Mohamoud Tani Warfaa, a citizen of Somaliland who was subjected to acts of torture at the hands of Col. Yusuf Abdi Ali ("Tukeh"), a high-ranking military commander in Siad Barre's decades-long military dictatorship. On May 21, 2019, after a three-day trial, a Virginia jury in federal district court unanimously found Col. Tukeh responsible for the torture of Warfaa and awarded Warfaa US$500,000 in compensatory and punitive damages.

The Pro Bono Deal of the Year winner will be announced at The American Lawyer Industry Awards gala on December 4 in New York.
