101 Bedford Hosts Community-Driven Seasonal Event Atop Expansive Roof Deck

101 Bedfordhosted the latest event of this year’s summer celebration with a community-driven terrarium-making night Wednesday, June 13, 7:30 p.m. at its breathtaking 17,000-square-foot furnished and landscaped roof deck across from McCarren Park. Designed as a relaxing and fun evening by one of the building’s tenants, the event allowed residents the chance to create their own miniature worlds of soil, sand, moss, charcoal, house plants and cacti alongside the occasional adult beverage. Supplies were provided by the complex.

“From the beginning, our goal was to create a building that could naturally develop into a community, from starter apartment to family home,” says co-developer Yoel Sabel of Halcyon Management. “The fact that one of 101 Bedford’s tenants took the initiative to produce her own event is proof of the genuine human habitat we’ve cultivated since we opened five years ago.”

Adds organizer Vashali Johnson, “As a resident and mother at 101 Bedford, I felt that hosting a terrarium-making event would invite people together from all walks of life. It allows children and adults the opportunity to socialize and foster relationships with the community we’ve built, which is a beautiful advantage to living in this building.”

101 Bedfordhas organically transitioned into an enclave for the community, negotiating its need to cater to families while maintaining its vaunted status as a super-cool destination for singles and recent college grads. With a tenant mix that encompasses approximately 20 percent families with children, there now is a roster of family-friendly activities including terrarium-making nights, pool parties and more, in addition to a host of high-spirited grown-up events such as outdoor big-screen movie nights, rooftop yoga and curated cocktail parties on the roof deck.

Group happenings at 101 Bedford have included wine tastings, comedy nights, a building kickball club, book clubs and seasonal holiday parties. In addition to group yoga inside the studio or up on the roof, there are Pilates classes, first-run movie viewings and previews of residents’ own films, and cooking classes. Summer painting events have been held under the pergola in the building’s central courtyard, an approximately quarter acre parklike setting with lush landscaping and bench seating.

For families with children, 101 Bedford offers a 1,200-square-foot, state-of-the-art playroom featuring eight toy cars and mini-scooters, toddler-friendly piano, hand puppets and puppet theater, giant stuffed giraffe, large rubber building blocks for eye-hand coordination, miniature grocery store complete with mini-shopping carts, and children’s reading library. Other activities have included cupcake decorating, music classes, and holiday photo sessions in the building’s own photography studio.

For health-conscious residents, there are yoga and Pilates classes inside 101 Bedford’s studio and, this summer, rooftop sessions are offered. Other fitness programs are available at the 2,500-square-foot fully-equipped fitness center. There is also an all-season indoor pool with hot-tub and comfortable cabana seating. Next to the pool area are men’s and women’s changing rooms with rain showers, steam rooms, saunas and programmable lockers.

Among the many other spa-worthy amenities at 101 Bedford are a PGA-certified golf simulator room, wine vault, party room, game room with billiards table and Wii stations, soundproof recording studio, photography studio, business center with free WiFi, and conference room/library. Pet-friendly 101 Bedford even has a canine cleaning station and an arrangement with a local provider for dog-walking and pet-sitting services.

Located at 101 Bedford Avenue, between North 11th and 12th Streets, the full-service 351-unit building also has 24/7 front desk/concierge service, on-site parking, dry-cleaning service, cold storage for refrigerated deliveries, and a proprietary package inventory app for tracking deliveries remotely.

The Hadas Metzler-designed studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments feature hardwood floors, open kitchens with Caesarstone countertops, porcelain-clad bathrooms and oversized windows that offer views of the Manhattan skyline, Brooklyn cityscapes, and the inner courtyard. With studios starting at $2,450, one-bedrooms from $3,250, and two bedroom apartments from $4,550, the building has remained well-occupied since inception.
