Parabellum Launches Special Situations Group, Appoints Jarvis Buckman Director

7/10/18

Parabellum Capital LLC, a leader in litigation finance, today announced the launch of its Special Situations Group, welcoming Jarvis Buckman as Director of Special Situations. Parabellum also announced that bankruptcy veteran Martin “Marty” Flics has rejoined the Firm as Senior Bankruptcy Advisor.

Mr. Buckman joins Parabellum from Knighthead Capital, a distressed-focused hedge fund, where he analyzed distressed situations to find investment opportunities across complex corporate and capital structures. Mr. Buckman’s skills at identifying a wide range of litigation investing opportunities presented in capital structures positions Parabellum uniquely in the market.

Mr. Buckman’s arrival follows Parabellum’s recent announcement that it expanded its sourcing and underwriting capabilities with three new hires. “Our industry is at the intersection of litigation and finance. Many of our competitors are focused exclusively on hiring legal talent. We have not shied away from adding to our bench of litigators, including recently. However, the addition of Jarvis reinforces our commitment to seizing opportunities and situations that span the spectrum of litigation finance,” said Howard Shams, Parabellum Co-Founder and CEO.

Mr. Buckman will work closely with Mr. Flics, a leading bankruptcy expert with over three decades of experience at some of the world’s top law firms including Linklaters, Latham & Watkins, and Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Mr. Flics advises Parabellum’s Bankruptcy Group, which makes significant capital available to key stakeholders in bankruptcy proceedings. He was previously a Principal at Parabellum from 2014 – 2016.

While Parabellum’s Special Situations Group will have synergies with its Bankruptcy Group, Mr. Buckman’s mandate will encompass the full range of special situations investing, seeking to capitalize on diverse opportunities related to litigants’ capital structures. Mr. Buckman will also work closely with Moshe Schwartz, Director of Portfolio Management, on individual case and portfolio hedging and other risk-mitigation strategies.

“Special situations exist beyond the bankruptcy context. With Jarvis, we create the ability to leverage deep credit perspective on top of our litigation acumen to find the best approach to risk-taking in any given situation,” continued Mr. Shams.
