Jaros, Baum & Bolles Announces 2020 Promotions

Jaros, Baum & Bolles (JB&B) is pleased to announce its promotions for 2020, including new Director Michelle DeCarlo and new Senior Associate Cristin Lucena, as well as the onboarding of the firm’s Director of Building Information Modeling, Emily Belote. Additionally, eight new Associates were named:Matthew Breitel, Richard Coley, Dustin Hsu, Karl Knehr, Christopher Pell, Dennis Poulos, Melissa Sosa and Michael Towers. JB&B congratulates these esteemed professionals on this well-deserved recognition of their continued commitment to uphold the highest industry standards, an integral component of the firm’s legacy.


Michelle DeCarlo, Cristin Lucena and Emily Belote

Michelle DeCarlo has worked with JB&B since 2007 and has led HVAC design on a wide variety ofoffice building, transportation, laboratory and healthcare facility projects, providing expertise on some of the firm’s most notable projects, such as the new core and shell office design for 30 Hudson Yards and the commercial office redevelopment of the landmarked Moynihan Train Hall. She serves as Programs Chair on the Board of Directors for the Commercial Real Estate Women of New York and recently completed four years of service on the ASHRAE New York Board of Governors, where she served as the Chairperson of its Women in ASHRAE Committee. In 2018, DeCarlo was recognized as one of BD+C’s 40 Under 40 and Professional Women in Construction’s 20 Under 40, and again in 2019 as one of the St. Francis Food Pantries’ Women of Valor. She is also founder of the JB&B Women’s Initiative, whose mission is to position women as leaders inside and outside the firm and to promote the retention of women through leadership and professional development.

Cristin Lucenajoined the firm in 2009 and has overseen a wide range of projects within the Plumbing and Fire Protection Department. Her expansive range of expertise on commercial offices, residential building, educational facilities, hotels and cultural institutions has recently been demonstrated on high-profile projects such as 15 Hudson Yards, 111 West 57th Street and the groundbreaking new cultural venue The Shed. In addition to managing the design of plumbing and fire protection systems on large-scale projects, she supervises a team of engineers and works closely with clients and other industry professionals. She is an active member of the Plumbing Foundation City of New York as well as the ACEC New York Plumbing Code Committee.

Emily Belote

JB&B welcomed Belote in August 2019 as the new Director of Building Information Modeling (BIM), one of the firm’s premiere modeling services. In her new role, Belote is responsible for BIM integration strategies as well as establishing standards, operating procedures, educational content and project support. She has more than a decade of experience with 3D modeling and has spent the past seven years working in the construction industry, where she was involved in the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center Expansion, among numerous other projects.

Matthew Breitel

Breitel has been with JB&B since 2012 and has played an instrumental role in the design of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems for numerous projects worldwide, including the Neurosurgery Inpatient Unit at Memorial Sloan Kettering and the Nestlé SHIELD North American Headquarters. In his former role as a Senior Project Engineer, he led the design team during the construction of One Vanderbilt, where his responsibilities included project management, coordination, design, calculations, preparation of construction documents and field observations. Outside of his work responsibilities, Breitel is an ACE Mentor for the ACE Mentor Program of Greater New York City.

Richard Coley

Coley joined the firm in 2016,bringing with him 16 years of experience in the audiovisual field as well as a diverse background that includes live entertainment, theater, broadcast, manufacturing and construction.On all of his projects at JB&B, Coley has demonstrated new insights and expertise that have been instrumental in the success of his projects.

Dustin Hsu

Hsu has been with LightBox Studios—JB&B’s lighting design division—since 2011, and has developed a diversified lighting portfolio of corporate interiors, lobbies, laboratories and healthcare facilities. With an unwavering commitment to create modern designs that meet both form and function while maintaining an intelligent sense of traditional application, Hsu has developed an innovative edge to lighting design,making him an asset to the firm. Some of his notable projects include Brooklyn Health Center, 61 Ninth Avenue, Shiseido Headquarters, and a prominent healthcare facility in New York.

Karl Knehr

Knehr has worked in JB&B’s Electrical Department since 2013, working on a wide variety of projects, including medical facilities, commercial office and laboratory fit-outs, mixed-use buildings and high-rise commercial office towers. Knehr has demonstrated considerable expertise on high-rise commercial office towers and mixed-use building for notable projects, including 4 World Trade Center and the full renovation of the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice. He also provided essential contributions to the firm’s healthcare portfolio.

Christopher Pell

Pell joined the JB&B team in 2016 as an Engineer in the Commissioning Department after several years in oilfield operations. Since that time, he has garnered experience and knowledge in commissioning of new and existing buildings, including commercial office, corporate headquarters, healthcare, data center and LEED green building projects. He has gained extensive experience in commercial buildings while working on projects such as 10 Hudson Yards anda prominent New York financial institution,as well as led commissioning activities at 3 World Trade Center. He also recently managed the commissioning of healthcare projects at North Shore University Hospital and the HSS West Side Sports Medicine Institute.

Dennis Poulos

Poulos started at JB&B in 2013 and has designed HVAC systems for projects in New York City such as the Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards and the Horace Mann School expansion. He has vast design expertise for large-scale infrastructure and has played an integral role in the Roche-Nutley campus MEP system evaluation. Most recently, he led the design team during the renovation of several projects for a prominent healthcare facility in New York.

Melissa Sosa

Sosa started at JB&B in 2016 as a Financial Specialist, and over the past four years has demonstrated unwavering dedication that has fostered her continued growth within the firm. In her most recent role as a Financial Manager, Sosa’s day-to-day responsibilities included, among numerous others, the processing of monthly closeout reports and schedules in preparation for tax returns, financial statement reviews and compilations, assisting in the development and maintenance of financial models, and providing support for the CFO and Partners with special projects.

Michael Towers

Towers has been at the firm since 2008, most recently serving as a Senior Project Engineer for JB&B Technologies. Towers has provided the IT and security design on a variety of projects, ranging from high-rise buildings and corporate office spaces to educational and research facilities. Most recently, Towers has worked on notable projects such as 15 and 30 Hudson Yards, the United Nations, Intercontinental Exchange and a prominent financial institution in New York, among others.
