DXA Studio Wins Numerous Prestigious Awards And Many Top Honors In 2020

DXA studio, a New York based architecture and design firm known for a diverse range of projects primarily in Manhattan and Brooklyn, won a number of highly acclaimed architecture and design awards in 2020. They have been recognized in the NYCxDESIGN Awards, the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) Awards, the Architect’s Newspaper Awards, and the American Institute of Architects New York State (AIANYS) Awards.

In May, DXA studio was awarded the Grand Prize in the category of “Commercial” in the prestigious 2020 NYCxDESIGN Awards by Interior Design and ICFF for their design of a future Midtown Urban Pathway Viaduct. The design proposes a pedestrian conduit that spans 9th Avenue and connects the new Moynihan Train Hall at West 31st Street to the High Line and Hudson Yards at 30th Street. DXA’s design references the historic interlaced steel plate work of the High Line and the intricate steel structure of the original inner concourse of the 1910 Penn Station.

This past year DXA also won a 2020 Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) National Award in the Multifamily Housing: Condominiums and Apartments category for the development at 280 St. Marks Avenue in Brooklyn. 280 St. Marks Avenue is an 80,000 square foot, 32-unit condominium building where DXA was tasked with maintaining the context of the surrounding Brooklyn neighborhood. The unique design features geometry that corresponds to the historic Flatbush Turnpike, whose early grid was superimposed by the City grid in the 1800’s resulting in angled neighboring buildings and irregular property lines, with the remainder dedicated to public use, including dedicated bike lanes and planters.

DXA studio Partner Wayne Norbeck said, “We are thrilled to have been recognized with honors by these prestigious institutions and publications. Our work this year spanned multiple categories of both built and future-oriented design. We are honored to be recognized by the many professionals who have judged and reviewed our work in 2020.”

DXA studio’s reimagining of the Brooklyn Bridge won top prize in the Best of Design Awards Unbuilt – Urban Design category, in the prestigious Architect’s Newspaper Awards for 2020. They also received an honorable mention in the Facades category for their work on the Maverick at 215-225 West 28th Street in Chelsea, developed by HAP Investments.

The American Institute of Architects New York State (AIANYS) recognized DXA studio’s exceptional work on reimagining the Brooklyn Bridge and awarded the firm an “Award of Merit.” DXA’s Great Bridge proposal envisions a future that elevates people over automobiles, reclaims land entangled by roads and ramps for civic use in the form of parks, museums, local commerce, recreation and housing, and makes the bridge more accessible to adjacent communities. In the design, the upper deck expansion becomes a planted promenade with lanes for tourists and commuters, while the lower deck features six traffic lanes reduced to two for trolleys and emergency vehicles, with the remainder dedicated to public use, including dedicated bike lanes and planters.

“Although 2020 was certainly a difficult year for everyone, our team met many challenges seeking a better future through thoughtful design, and it is an honor to be recognized for our hard work,” said DXA studio Partner Jordan Rogove.
