Cutting edge, 6,000 SF Modo Yoga is positioned to become a premier destination for hot yoga in New York City
DXA studio today announced the completion of a new Yoga studio, Modo Yoga, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The 6,000 square foot (SF) facility is an environment that embodies the “calm mind, fit body, inspired life” core principles of Modo Yoga. DXA studio worked side by side with the owners of Modo Yoga to ensure that the building directly connected these core values and principles.
“We are always thrilled to work with clients that understand the importance of design and architecture’s ability to positively affect spirit and well-being,” says DXA studio Partner Wayne Norbeck of Modo Yoga’s Owners. “Sarah, Guillaume and Rebecca were incredibly collaborative and supportive of a vision to immerse the studio in natural light and beautiful, tactile and environmentally responsible materials,” says Jordan Rogove, DXA’s other partner.
DXA and Modo were connected through Jordan’s brother, Greg, a drummer for Devendra Banhart, as well as a solo artist. On a recent tour with Modo Co-Owner and Arcade Fire member, Sarah Neufeld, Greg, who had previously connected Arcade Fire with DXA regarding their respective works in Haiti, suggested that DXA would be a perfect fit to help realize the Modo vision.
“We were delighted Greg connected us with DXA and that Wayne and Jordan shared our enthusiasm for the location in Williamsburg from the get-go,” says Sarah Neufeld. “Walking the site for the first time a year ago, we all felt its immense potential and just how special a place it could be. It was an ideal collaboration. DXA worked tirelessly with us to realize our vision and to make it into what we believe to be the most beautiful, unique and sustainable yoga studio out there. It truly has an uplifting and vibrant quality that really resonates with our members.”
Located between the East River Waterfront and the lively Bedford Avenue thoroughfare, the state-of-the-art facility can precisely calibrate heat and humidity settings for the two 60 person studios and has ample locker room/shower spaces, social areas, and a retail amenity. With its inviting street presence, which includes a custom fabricated storefront and weathered steel aesthetic, the building stays true to the gritty industrial and metalworking history of the area.
Within, aspects of the building’s light manufacturing character, such as exposed brickwork, tall ceilings, and column-free spans are also celebrated. The interior design strikes a balance between rustic and refined through a series of intimately scaled spaces wrapped with reclaimed wood, cork floors and a living wall, to expansive studios with clean lines and diffused lighting via continuous skylights, providing a serene setting for yoga practice.
