City Harvest to Expand Food Rescue and Distribution Services in Response to Need in New York City with Relocation to 150,000 SF Brooklyn Facility
DH Property Holdings Closes on Warehouse and Will Lease to City Harvest, the Nonprofit Focused on Feeding Hungry New Yorkers
City Harvest, DH Property Holdings and JLL confirmed the closing on the sale and leasing of 150 52nd Street, Brooklyn, which will house City Harvest’s Food Rescue Facility and administrative offices. The JLL team that represented City Harvest included Rob Kossar, Paul Mas, Adam Citron and Ellen Herman; and Leslie Lanne from JLL represented DH Property Holdings.
The multilevel warehouse totals approximately 150,000 SF excluding truck court, loading bays and parking. The site search began two years ago when City Harvest’s current Food Rescue Facility in Long Island City, Queens was rezoned from industrial to residential just a few years before the organization’s lease would terminate. City Harvest recognized a strategic opportunity to relocate to a larger, more versatile facility that would position the organization well to continue its vital work rescuing and delivering food for the nearly 1.2 million New Yorkers, including 1 in every 5 children, who are experiencing food insecurity.
“City Harvest rescued over 63 million pounds of food in 2019 and we project that the need will increase in 2020 and beyond,” said Jilly Stephens, City Harvest CEO. “Thanks to the support of our Board of Directors, the diligence of our team at JLL and to DH Property Holdings, we are thankful to be able to provide more resources for the significant population of New Yorkers who rely on us to get dinner on the table for their families,” Stephens added. “In the coming months we will have more specific information about this exciting project.”
City Harvest has been dedicated to feeding hungry New Yorkers for more than 35 years and has rescued and delivered over 750 million pounds of food for New Yorkers in need over that time. According to the organization, with two out of every five households struggling to make ends meet and 23.1 million visits to food pantries, soup kitchens, and other emergency food programs in New York City last year, City Harvest’s work is vital to help feed New Yorkers in need every year.
