DXA studio, a New York based architecture and design firm known for a diverse range of projects primarily in Manhattan and Brooklyn, has announced that their project, 280 St. Marks Avenue in Brooklyn, has received a Merit award in the Multifamily Housing: Condominiums and Apartments category in the prestigious Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) Awards for 2020.
280 St. Marks Avenue is an 80,000 square foot, 32-unit condominium building where DXA was tasked with maintaining the context of the surrounding Brooklyn neighborhood. The unique design features notable angles that correspond to the historic Flatbush Turnpike, whose early grid was superimposed by the City grid in the 1800’s resulting in angled neighboring buildings and irregular property lines, with the remainder dedicated to public use, including dedicated bike lanes and planters.
“280 St Mark’s was our love letter to Prospect Heights and its wonderful verdant tree and townhouse lined streets,” said Jordan Rogove, Co-Founder of DXA studio. “We spent a lot of time thinking about how to mirror the qualities of the neighborhood in the building and focused on community oriented indoor and outdoor spaces, and private outdoor spaces for all of the residences. This became the heart of the project.”
The form of the building is derived from the aforementioned irregular lot shape, and with an atypical depth for New York City - over 130’ – DXA was able to couple an abundance of natural light with a bright interior material palette giving the living spaces a prevailing sense of calm and wellbeing.
“We are excited to be chosen for this award and recognized for the inventive and sensitive thinking that is behind the project at 280 St. Marks Avenue,” said Wayne Norbeck, a partner at DXA studio. “We’d like to thank SARA and the jury for presenting us with this honor.”
